For my bachelor thesis, I developed a serious game in assignment of the University of Wageningen with the theme of food waste.
The people at University of Wageningen were studying food waste and wanted a serious game to collect data on the behavior of people concerning food in their own house. In the final game, the player has to cook and feed for king Carl (koning Karel) and his family. The player has to do their own groceries in town, where the supermarket has everything at a cheaper price, while the more specific stores (butcher, bakery, and grocery store) have higher quality food, but at a more expensive price.
The player then has to decide what to cook for the king, and then cook it without burning it. The food in the cupboards and the fridge can go bad if they are not used in time. The king has preferences for certain food and variety, and can become angry at the player. The food bin is a catapult, and when emptied the food waste gets catapulted into the village. The more waste in the village, the angrier the villagers become. Therefore, the player has to find a balance between buying, cooking, and throwing away food.
Another bachelor student wrote the code and focused on collecting the data. I designed the game and drew the scenery, products, and characters. However, to test the interface of the game, I made a simplified version of it in Unity. The pdf to my bachelor thesis can be found here. Here are some screenshots of the game.
